When is Charlotte Going to Grow Up (Architecturally)

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 by Phillip Atchison

A truly inspiring city needs more than a handful of staid glass obelisks plunked downtown. I realize birdsong gregory is a branding and marketing agency, not an architectural firm, but from our office in the First Ward, we’d love to see something truly remarkable grace our skyline.

What we and the rest of creative Charlotte would like to see is a truly innovative structure like the new Helix Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Gone are the rigid hallways and duplicated room views of a traditional hotel. Here, the floor constantly shifts in width and pitch as it rises to the top level. The running track on the fifth floor represents the only time when the ramping ceases and a flat surface prevails. Designed by New York’s Leeser Architecture.
